How it works

About the SWP calculator

A Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) pays you a fixed amount every month from a mutual fund, while the remaining units stay invested. It is commonly used for retirement income.

If the monthly withdrawal is higher than what the corpus earns, the balance falls over time. The calculator tells you if and when the money would run out.

The formula

Balancem = Balancem−1 × (1 + r) − W

r = annual return ÷ 12, W = monthly withdrawal.

Frequently asked questions

What is a safe withdrawal amount?

It depends on how long you need the income and the return you can reasonably expect. A withdrawal that is lower than the corpus’s expected earnings lets the capital last longer.

How are SWP withdrawals taxed?

Each withdrawal is treated as a redemption, so only the gain portion is taxed as capital gains. Tax rules change, so please check with a tax adviser.
